Do you like the Music Player?

January 26, 2008

Hear no EvilHave you used the Music Player yet? Check it out and lemme know what you think.

I found out about the FineTune player not too long ago. There are many embeddable music players out there, but this is the sweetest one I’ve ever seen. First of all, you’ve gotta love being able to see the album cover that is playing as well as a sneak peak of the next one. The audio quality also seems to be pretty good too. Only rarely do I get lag/buffering issues.

Best of all, their music library seems to be very extensive (all the major labels, 2 million songs and growing, including catalogs not available on most online services like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin).

Here is a brief rundown of FineTune…

  • Led by survivors of the original Napster and other digital music ventures
  • Playlists must be at least 45 songs
  • Maximum of 3 songs per artist
  • Will add songs for you based on your favorite artists
  • 30 second previews for every song
  • Can’t skip too many songs in a row

These rules make a lot of sense. You can’t just add an entire album by 1 artist thanks to the 3 song limit. Forcing you to add 45 songs per playlist also increases the number of times all participating musicians and labels get their music heard, which of course increase the chances of people using the “buy song” links for their music.

While it really sucks that the player stops every time you load a page, I’m more than happy to abide by these rules for the free service that they’re providing. You can create as many playlists as you want! My current playlist is just a random mix of songs, but I started working on a new playlist where all of the songs relate to “work.” I still need 20 songs before I can play it tho…

If anyone has songs that they’d like me to add to the site playlist, feel free to make requests! I’m also down to collaborate on specific “theme” playlists if you’re interested and you can always create your own playlist and submit it to me. I’m always interested in hearing original creative music, whatever that type of music may be.

So please, add some comments about the Music Player. Do you have to wait for the songs to buffer? Is it more of a nuisance than a benefit? Which songs are you feeling? Which ones can you not stand? What type of music would you like to hear more of? There’s plenty of room for requests…

Is no one feelin my music?

Post some comments here or I’ll have to consider scrapping it and replacing it with a giant skyscraper ad, which I’d rather not do…

IMO this is the best “free” music player on the net! Even though the songs on the list play in random order, I was able to listen to 6 great songs back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back. The 7th song was a filler that I never heard before but it was still pretty good.

Although the sound quality isn’t CD-like, it rarely skips or lags. The benefits of having your playlists stored on the net, the wide selection of songs, and ease of player control, IMO, far outweigh the minor annoyances of having to register (with minimal private info) and set up the playlists. I love being able to work at pretty much any computer knowing I can just login to Finetune and start playing songs from my playlist. Situations abound where this feature would be useful to me

And the name “Finetune”…how great is that? “Finetune” has quickly entered my top 10 list of favorite names/”words”. Derived from the word “tune” which has multiple meanings (as a noun: a succession of notes forming a distinctive sequence, AND as a verb: adjust for (better) functioning, to make an instrument have the right frequencies and sounds), “Finetune” seems like a perfect fit for this kind of quality online service…

“Finetune” is also in an excellent metaphor that should be adopted by everyone. I saw it being used in Alan Greenspan’s book “The Age of Turbulence”. He wrote 3 rules of thumb for the kind of regulation (by government) that produces the least interference:
    1) Regulation approved in a crisis must subsequently be FINETUNED. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, rushed through Congress in the wake of the Enron and WorldCom bankruptcies and mandating greater financial disclosure by corporations, is today’s prime candidate for revision [FINETUNING].

The third rule of thumb doesn’t use the word “FINETUNE” but could well very easily have

    2) Regulations outlive their usefulness and should be renewed periodically. I learned this lesson watching Virgil Mattingly, the longtime chief of the Federal Reserve Board’s legal staff. He took very seriously the statutory requirement to review each Federal Reserve regulation every five years; any regulation that was judged to be obsolete was unceremoniously scrapped.

As I was reading this, I was like dang, “FINETUNING” applies too everything….laws, business models, mental models, speech, music, car engines, computers…what works today may not work tomorrow. So go FINETUNE your NBA fantasy lineups before its too late! Go pick up Chucky Atkins..he’ll help you in threes and assists!

Just thought I’d share…its a lot of rambling, sorry.

I really like it, altho I need to start making new playlists. I also urge others to create their own and send it to me. If I dig the music, I’ll put it up for awhile. Which song did you think was filler?

FineTune is a great name indeed. Of course, sounding a lot like iTunes doesn’t hurt…

I’ll send you my playlist soon. Right now, it’s super random so I’m still trying to decide if it needs editing. I thought “I’ll Fly With You” by Gigi D’Agostino was filler. Good but not exceptional. I just added a few Massive Attack (”Tear Drop”, “Angel”, and “Future Proof”) and Panacea (”One Shine” and “Starlight”) songs…pretty chill.

Got Something to Say?
