A Tribute to: Monta Ellis

August 29, 2008 by Evil E

Here’s a little something I wrote to go along with some video clips of one of the most unstoppable young guards in the game today.

Sadly, the Warriors’ rising star underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn ligament in his left ankle and he’ll be out for at least 12 weeks.

So here are 50 lines and 8 video clips (almost all are 30 seconds or less) dedicated to Monta Ellis. Please join me in showing him some love!

Who is Monta Ellis? Well, that’s a good question
he’s from Mississippi, basketball’s his profession
If you’ve never seen him play, serious skills you have missed
words can’t fully describe him, so I’ll use vids to assist
His talent on the court is far from average or the median
but he’s always having fun, cuz he’s a long-time COMEDIAN

1-17-2007, the day of the BIG TRADE
Harrington & Captain Jack for Murphy & Dunleavy, Jr.
The same day Monta was in L.A., playing against Senior
I was there in the stands, one of his best games of 2007:
7 rebounds, 28 points, 3 steals, and 7 assists…
and then back in Oakland, 7 days later, he did this:

his first game-winning shot, sealed the win with a kiss
At that point I was a believer, I had caught Monta fever
“Give this guy an award, he’s a Lebowski Achiever!”
A few months later he won, MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
So much game, Ellis should run for Mayor
of Oaktown with Too Short, they can kick it in the trunk
Hey Leandro Barbosa, how’d you like this dunk?

And not to pick on you cuz you’re really quite fast
but you can only beat Ellis if he runs out of gas
So let’s end this whole debate, wondering who’s the quickest
there’s only one on top and his scoring arsenal is the sickest
Who’s the FASTEST DUDE IN THE NBA? Let’s just ask Monta!

“Whatever you wanna do,” that’s right, you just heard it
Toot that horn Monta, that’s how Baron would have preferred it
Possessing one of a kind speed, he’s the MISSISSIPPI BULLET
and on the court he stands out, like Dwayne Schintzius’ mullet
Golden State’s top gunner, check out this 3-point runner

that wasn’t hard at all, which is what makes it such a stunner
He’s a DRIBBLE SPIN MASTER, advancing much faster
Absorbing body contact and finishing past ya
Rarely missing in the paint, Rod Strickland would approve
and if you want some proof just watch this move on J-Smoov

Hangtime indeed, that’s my man Jim Barnett
Ellis was the TOP DUNKER UNDER 6-4, and don’t you forget
Dude shot 60% FG for a month, something only 8 other guards have done
and he’s 22 years old, meaning his career has just begun
But check this out, I’m gonna share Monta’s little secret
just don’t tell him I showed you, he might not want you to peep it

HOT WAX BABY, he’s gotta loosen up them fingers
and whenever he gets hurt, we’ve gotta hope it doesn’t linger
Cuz Monta just got paid, and now he’s pretty wealthy
but unfortunately right now, his ankle isn’t healthy
So let’s show him support, and wish him all the best
but if you’re one of his haters, Monta’s got a request:

Keep doubting & keep talking, he’ll keep proving you wrong
Yes, I STILL BELIEVE and my name is E. Wong
I’m paying the man tribute, because Monta is amazing
Get well soon bro, and come back with guns blazing!

This is great video footage!! Monta got game and will be back…probably with a better jumper. I wrote about him too on hoopforlife.com, hope to see him back on the court soon!

  5. Terry says:

I caught sight of Monte when I was home on leave and they play crossed town rival Murrah( Lindsey Hunter, Othello Harrington came out of this high schoo) and he was burning. But that wasn’t my first time I heard of dude. I was a senior at Provine(C/O98) Monte was on point then as a lil young’n. He possess the love of the game that most players lose sight of once they’ve been in the league for some years. He is a beast and i know coach Billups is proud that he had a chance to coach him. MISSISSIPPI…WE IN HERE…get well Monte i’m ready to see you break some ankles this year

  6. Dirt Pittt says:

Thanks for the vids. They were fun to watch and to get to know my favorite player even better. Get well Monte! W’s need ya.

  7. Smack Adams says:

This is nearly as big a disappointment as Oden last year. I just hope teh Dubs are either good enough or bad enough to keep Monta from coming back too soon.

Hope he sees this page, too. Nice job Evil E!
(Evil’s the mixter, I’m the rap trickster. Paparazzi’s on teh bum rush for pictures”)

You’re taking me back in time, friend.

  8. Evil E says:

    Thanks guys…

I hope the 5,000+ of you who just came in from ESPN didn’t forget to Bookmark my site!

  9. Rich says:

So is this a motorcycle accident? Seems the injury (ESPN) is not a basketball injury

  10. Evil E says:

    Say it ain’t so Monta!

Here is the advice Baron Davis posted for his “little bro” on Yardbarker. Good stuff.

    Monta…

When I got the news about Monta’s injury it made me think about my own college injuries and the road back to being healthy. I hope my little bro gets back on the court soon but my advice homie: BE PATIENT. The Warriors training staff is going to give him great support and if anyone can come back stronger it’s him. Monta has the ultimate confidence and work ethic. But the most important thing is patience.

I don’t like to see when guys try to play hurt cause in the end they’re the only ones who get judged by it. Fans and reporters sometimes don’t mention that the guy’s hurt. Sometimes they don’t know. But everyone is waiting for you to be back to the level you were. As long as you listen to your body, are open and honest with the trainers, and you keep your goals in mind, then it’s possible to come back even stronger than before.

Look at Amare…. it’s hard to believe he had microfracture surgery! MJ sat out his second season taking care of his foot while the whole league was screaming for him to come back. But he was thinking of his entire career, not just one season.

Think about the future, be patient, and work hard at your rehab. That’s always my advice when I hear people are hurt. Monta… praying for you bro!

    BOOM

  12. T King says:

I've called Monta the fastest man in the NBA for years, even back when he was just a rookie.

I was told no way, have you seen the Brazilian blur? Nobody can sprint with him!

Well, Barbosa is fast and I'll give him that, but he can't keep up with Monta, not even running out his ass!

  13. Brian D. says:

Hey E, do you think when Monta returns he will put up numbers comparable to last year? I have Crawford on my team right now, and I'm thinking about also signing Monta by cutting one of my bigs (Haslem or M. Gasol). There is no IR spot, but I'm pretty sore that someone already snatched up Gilbert last week in anticipation of his return. I want to be strong in assists and points every week. Anyone out there have any ideas? Can Monta and Jamal coexist in the backcourt without overly taking away from each other's stats?
