Classic Cards – The 1991-92 Orlando Magic

May 31, 2009 by Evil E

Before Dwight there was Shaq, and before that there was the ‘91-92 Orlando squad that lost 61 games. Do you know who led that team in points and rebounds?

In ‘91-92, the Magic went 21-61 (2nd worst record in the league) in just their 3rd NBA season. Afterwards, they won the #1 pick in the 1992 draft, which allowed them to select a young big man named Shaquille O’Neal.

A dozen years later, they finished with the EXACT same record, won the the #1 pick again, and selected Dwight Howard. In both cases, Orlando soon made it to the NBA Finals behind the dominant play of their powerful centers. But were you watching them back in ‘91-92?

To refresh your memory, here are basketball cards of 14 guys who played for them that season. If you claim to be a true Magic fan, and if you were born before 1982, then you should be able to name at least 10 of them. This challenge is much harder than the Lakers one, so I’ll give serious props to anyone who can name all 14.

    3. Orlando Woolridge
    4. No idea. Brian Williams?
    5. Nick Anderson

    13. THAT is clearly Greg Kite
    14. no idea

Freaking hard. The only reason I even remember Orlando Woolridge is because he was actually decent in Tecmo NBA Basketball for Super Nintendo!!

    • Evil E says:

You only got 5 right ej.

Woolridge was cool, but he never played for Orlando! Isn’t it funny how easy it is to pinpoint Greg Kite? From the angle of his card you can barely make out his face, and he was never much of a player, but it’s still almost automatic.

The Brian Williams AKA Bison Dele story might be the most mysterious NBA death of all time. :( Rest in Peace Bison.

    • RBAej says:

Yeah, Brian Williams/Bison Dele was awesome. Really sad story. I can’t even imagine what made me think Woolridge was on the Magic. LOL!

  4. Wow. Some serious blasts from the past. Brian Williams, Dennis Scott, Mark Acres, Stanley Roberts, etc. Great stuff.

  5. Kicking Rocks says:

    Yo!

Stanley Roberts was a fat baller at the time. Pig Miller and Stanley were very effective Fat men. Weight control forced them out of the league.

Brian Williams = Bison Dele Oddly died on a sail boat in the Carribbean. Poor guy was struggling with an emotional personality disorder. Was making a small comeback with the bulls before his tragic death. IIRC his brother was killed on the boat with him.

Great run down memory lane. Thanks E.

    • Evil E says:

Hey Rocks – You gotta read the Bison Dele story that I linked to above. It’s a really well done piece and includes about as much info as you could possibly find on what happened to him. While he admitted to not being that passionate about hoops, for some reason I like him even MORE now…

  6. RBAej says:

I’m disappointed I didn’t Chris Corchiani. I thought that looked like him, but I thought that he was a Celtics original discovery from the CBA or something. I didn’t know he was an NBA veteran by the time we got him. I remember he just dribbled the ball up the court once and bounced it right of his shin out of bounds and Heinsohn nearly had an aneurysm.

  7. Ryan says:

“10. This guy just looks like he sucks. No idea.”

    LOL..

    I only got 5.

  8. Jonny says:

hahahaha I don’t know any of these

  9. Jonny says:

    1. I know this guy. I’m pissed I can’t remember his name. Did he play for the Hornets or Bucks…and Nets..daam I remember him.

    2. Dennis Scott

    3. Olden Polynince :x

    4. Brian “The Bison” Williams

    5. Brick Anderson :-)

    6. This guy is like #1 I remember him.

    7., 8., 9. 10. – Scott Skiles

    11. Kendall Gill

    12. George Davis :(

    13. Marty :|

    14. Derrick :?

    • Kicking Rocks says:

      11 is Kendall Gill?

I thought that was him. But I thought the Nets drafted him. Talk about another weirdo with personality disorder.

      • jonny says:

I have no idea I havent checked yet..was he even in the NBA in 91?

        • Kicking Rocks says:

Yes…because I remember the hoops “lottery cards”. Each of the players in their suits and some in franchise hats. In that case, Derrick Coleman was the Nets Lottery pick. Gary Payton was 2 for the Sonics.

By default Gill would have been selected by one of these teams. Clipper and Kings they always sucked making them lottery eligible. Plus the expansion teams Hornets, Magic, Twolves or Heat. Or whomever else i am forgetting.

Not the Clippers…I followed them briskly.

Kings. No. Just doesn’t fit in my mind.

Magic. No. Or else he would have been on the Penny, Shaq, Nick Anderson and Dennis Scott team.

Heat & Twolves. Teams he joined later in his career. Also the Bulls. I remember an interview on NBA Stuff with Ahmad Rashad or MTV cribs with his hugely terribly decorated house. Most of his stuff was 90’s type of furniture with lacquer finish.

Hornets possibly. I have an old Alonzo Mourning Charlotte Hornets Jersey. I will post it one day.

HEY E……this would be a great topic for your site. Players old jersey for teams they no longer play for. I come up with the darndest ideas while visiting your site.

Or whatever else team sucked in the late 80’s early 90’s.

  10. Evil E says:

Yeah, Kendall Gill was drafted by the Hornets the year before they took LJ #1 overall. #11 above is not Gill, altho I see the resemblance. Anyway, how in the world do you remember what type of furniture he had in his crib? :P

#1 played for the Celtics, Sonics, Bulls, and Magic. He’s also had 1 season as a head coach.

#3 is Stanley Roberts and not Polynice. He was Orlando’s 1st round pick out of LSU in ‘91, which was weird because Shaq was Orlando’s 1st round pick out of LSU in ‘92. But I know, he actually looks kinda skinny in that photo!

#6 is the guy who the Magic in total points and rebounds in ‘91-92. I admittedly don’t remember him at all. :|

#8 is Chris Corchiani as RBAej said.

#9 lasted in Orlando till 95-96.

#10 somehow averaged 20 points and 10 boards in college at Oral Roberts. 8O

    #11 is a current GM.

#12 actually averaged 12+ points 3 years in a row, albeit for a crappy Orlando team. :D

#13 is Greg Kite, as said by RBAej.

#14 isn’t fair because you can barely see him, but he stuck around for the Magic’s ‘94-95 season when they made it to the NBA Finals. That year, after Dennis Scott and Nick Anderson, he was their 3rd leading scorer among guys on this page.

  11. frankie buckets! says:

i beleive we have a donald royale sighting! and do i see david wingate in there? either way this cracked me up!

    • Evil E says:

Hey Frankie. Those are good guesses, but neither man was on that team. Royal joined ORL the next season. Glad you enjoyed it.

  12. Eric says:

    1. Litterial Green (played in France)
    2. Wilkins
    3. Catledge (played in France)
    4. Williams
    5. Anderson
    6. Royal (played in Spain)
    7. Skiles
    8. Corchiani
    9. Larry Krystowiak (played in France) ????
    10 . ?
    11 Otis Smith ???
    12 ?
    13 Kite
    14 ?

    • Evil E says:

Nice picks Eric. How’d you know those guys played in France?

Litterial Green is a good guess for #1, but that’s actually former Bobcats coach Sam Vincent!

#2 is Dennis Scott. I’m surprised you miss that one.

Props for being the first person to mention Terry Catledge, but you have him mixed up, as he’s not #3.

Royal and Krystowiak are incorrect, but you got Magic GM Otis Smith right.

Should I unveil more of these players or shall we wait for a die-hard Orlando fan to come along?

  13. IG says:
