Classic Cards – The 1993-94 Los Angeles Lakers

May 31, 2009 by Evil E

It’s time to find out who the REAL Laker fans are. Can you differentiate between these two players?

In ‘93-94, the Lakers lost 49 games and finished 5th in the Pacific Division. They went thru 3 different coaches, their total attendance ranked 22nd out of 27 teams, and their leading scorer averaged just 14.2 points per game. Needless to say, it was a far cry from the “Showtime” era.

Things started to improve the next season after drafting Eddie Jones, and since then, they’ve won 65% of their regular season games, made the playoffs in 14 of the past 15 years, and been to the NBA Finals 6 times. As one of the winningest franchises in sports history, it hasn’t been hard to be an L.A. Lakers fan. But were you there in ‘93-94???

To refresh your memory, here are cards of 14 guys who played for them that season. If you claim to be a true Lakers fan, and if you were born before 1985, then you should be able to name at least 12 of them. The first few are easy, but after that it gets a little more challenging. Let’s find out who the die-hard fans are!

    This is pimp! 1-Worthy 2-Divac 3-Van Exel 4-Christie 5-Lynch 6-Campbell 7-Peeler 8-Threat 9-? 10-Rambis 11-Bowie 12-Edwards 13-Tony Smith 14-Fish This was a funky team! :D

    • Evil E says:

12/14 for Jeeves. I expected better from someone who stays up late to watch Laker game replays! Not bad tho…

  2. RBAej says:

    1. Big Game James
    2. Vlade
    3. Nick Van Exel
    4. Doug Christie
    5. George Lynch
    6. Elden Campbell
    7. I’m probably wrong because I also guessed Terry Teagle for the Orlando questions, but I actually think this is Terry Teagle
    8. Sedale Threat
    9. Oh wow. LOL! No idea.
    10. Rambis
    11. Not sure. His face looks like Artests, though
    12. James Edwards
    13. not sure
    14. not sure

    • Evil E says:

Haha, wrong on both accounts for Terry Teagle. Altho my memory of him is rocking a beard, so I wouldn’t recognize him after he shaved it off.

  3. RBAej says:

I can’t believe I missed Peeler. For some reason he was one of my favorite players back then!!

  4. Kicking Rocks says:

14, 13 and the white guy before Rambis are tough. Everyone else I know.

    14. ?
    13. Tony Brown or for some reason…he reminds me of a Robin

    and finally unknown white guy.

Let check out the magic roster.

Thank god you picked fleer ultra. Every other card brand was terrible in the early to mid 90’s.

  5. RBAej says:

E – this is unbelievably fun. I could play this game all day.

  6. Jonny says:

    1. James Worthy – on his last legs took his post game to a new level. The Worthy spin was on display. You guys see how Sheed, Jamison, Jordan and even Rick Fox (NC) all have sweet post game. They all learned from the master WORD UP.

    2. Vlade Divac

    3. Nick

    4. Doug Christie (he was a hot dog. he always showboated. I remember thinking to myself, “this guy could be like Pippen” and then he would miss a layup. He was really athletic. Straight chump tho.

    5. George Lynch was a baller even as a rookie. He may have gotten hurt. I can’t remember but when he was healthy that baseline jumper was money and for a smaller guy he would bang.

    6. Elden – I had high hopes for him.

    7. Peeler

    8. The Thief

    9.

    10. Rambis

    11. Sam Bowie

    12. James Edwards

    13. Anthony (Tony) Smith

    14. Antonio Harvey..Antonio? That fucker could throw it down! I went to a game against either the Sonics or Nuggets and he crushed on Mutombo or Kemp..I can’t remember but the crowd went berserk!

    • Evil E says:

Yeah, someone finally got Antonio Harvey! Props Jonny.

Jeeves said Derek Fisher haha. I can see the slight head resemblance, but there’s a 10 inch height difference and Fish was still 3 years away!

I agree that George Lynch was badass. He played a HUGE role in UNC winning a national championship and Philly getting to the NBA Finals. I’m looking at his Laker stats now, and as a rookie, he pulled down more OFFENSIVE rebounds than defensive, and he averaged 1.44 steals in less than 25 minutes per game. That converts to 2.78 steals per 48 minutes! Dude was tough as nails.

However, I don’t think that Worthy is making a spin move in that photo. Considering the defender’s stance and the fact that James has his eyes on the ball and not the hoop, it seems to me like he’s catching an offensive rebound that took a weird bounce. I could be wrong tho.

No commentary on Threatt, Rambis, Bowie, and Edwards? I was hoping to see that!

  7. Jonny says:

i wasn’t taking about Worthy in the photo I was taking about his game at that point in his career. He got the ball about 15′ from the hoop, waiting for the defender to get up on him and he would just fuck them up. It was the simplest spin move but it was so effective. He would fake or left or right real hard showing the ball and just like that spin in the other direction. The end result was a layup or a money short jumper.

Edwards was “that old piece of shit from the Pistons” I didn’t like him. He did some good things…or I should say I expected him to be an absolute zero but he did score a couple points and get some boards..I guess.

Threatt was dope. He took over for Magic and did his thing. He was great to watch and Chick Hearn the Lakers play by play guy loved talking about him. I don’t have any moments I recall..no game winners or anything. Kind of like I know when Kobe will shoot just from the way he gets a rebound and hasn’t even crossed midcourt I could tell when Threatt was about to get a steal. He could buckle down and rip anyone…I’ll have to check youtube I bet they’ll be highlights of him rippin some ballers.

Rambis was done. He had bounced around by then and Bowie was nothing I can remember..just ugly.

Tony Smith deserved some props tho. He played solid. He must have been like what Dantay Jones is to the Nuggets now. Cuzz I remember him always playing..maybe he started and then that was it.

  8. Jonny says:

..and by the way judging from the pic of Worthy, he had just spun on whoever that Antonio Davis looking chump is.

That’s how sick the spin move was. 8)

  9. Kicking Rocks says:

Sedale Threat was a solid solid pg. Glue guy leader for the post Showtime Lakers. Skinny dude with game. Sedale, John Stockton and Mark Price are probably the last 3 dudes who looked appropriate in short shorts.

James Edwards and Sam Bowie sucked. Edwards was slightly better. Basically twin decrepit towers. No talent and less mobility.

Sam Bowie is getting blocked in his photo. Lol.

My favorite new age Laker was Elden Campbell. Big man. Small hands. His post game slooooowly came around. But his number and skills improved every year when he first entered the league. Hated to see him leave

Peeler was a chucker. Sweet left handed chucker.

Doug Christie. Was the Laker I wanted kicked off the team. How people want Brian Cook and Luke sent away. I really didn’t like his face.

    Enough E?

  10. jonny says:

thats funny how you talk about Elden. Every year for his first 7 years Stu would point out how Elden had scored more than the season before…there was one other thing that kept going up, maybe his fg%

He was good. A giant PF. I thought he and Shaq were gonna make an awesome combo but it never worked out. He played great when Shaq was injured which was often but he never excelled playing next to him.

    Too bad.

    • Evil E says:

I liked Elden. Did you guys know that he played with BOTH Horace Grant and Dale Davis at Clemson? Ho graduated the year before Davis got there, but Elden played with both. Those guys must have dominated the paint in college.

    • Kicking Rocks says:

      Jonny,

I remember Stu saying that. So I looked it up some time ago. And its false by small percentage points.

The first 3 seasons held true. Then its not an accurate statement. Although Elden did play better ball.

      • Jonny says:

yeah he did get better and better. he was never a beast on the boards but he was pretty good on the block. he had postgame. I remember one game it was Lakers vs. the Knicks and he was killing it. I think he had 37 points..he was hitting everything. He stepped behind the line and drilled a 3. Me and my homie Shaun were going crazy. I think we were 15 years old…of course at the end of OT he got the ball on the block and it slipped out of his hands and the Lakers lost. But that was crazy.

  11. IG says:

Is #9 Trevor Wilson? It can’t be. Trevor has darker skin tone than shown on the card.
