What were today’s head coaches and general managers doing 20 years ago?
In recent years, many former NBA players have ascended the ranks to “Head Coach” and “General Manager” status, or “Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations” in some cases.
While thumbing thru some old basketball cards, I decided to pull out every current NBA head coach and general manager (or equivalent) that I could find. I thought others might enjoy these, so here are the 15 I found from the Eastern Conference.
All of these cards are either ‘89-90 or ‘90-91 Hoops, so all of the photos are from 18-20 years ago…
Maurice Cheeks - 76ers coach
Rod Higgins - Bobcats GM
Larry Brown - Bobcats coach
Scott Skiles - Bucks coach
John Paxson - Bulls GM
Vinny Del Negro - Bulls coach
Danny Ferry - Cavaliers GM
Danny Ainge - Celtics GM
Glenn “Doc” Rivers - Celtics coach
Mike Woodson - Hawks coach
Pat Riley - Heat GM
Otis Smith - Magic GM
Larry Bird - Pacers GM
Joe Dumars - Pistons GM
Sam Mitchell - Raptors coach

Dude! those were the first set of basketball cards that I owned; the ones without the color outline (just grey background). I remember all of them like it was yesterday. Man I feel old!

Damn this reminds me, I’ve got most of that 89-90 set. Used to buy a pack a day b/c they had the best gum in the biz! Also, that Danny Ferry card is the worst and ugliest basketball card in the history of western civilization. That’s Bill Walton talking, not me.
Yeah, someone needs to make a lifesize poster of that Ferry card and go to a Cavs game to taunt him. And I’m sure it would either scare the living daylights out of LeBRon or have him laughing hysterically.
