Reader Praise for Roto Evil
February 9, 2008 by Evil E
Here are some of my reader emails: a lot of love and a teaspoon of hate.
First off, I want to thank everyone who has emailed me over the past 4 months. While I try to keep my ego in check, it’s always nice to be recognized for whatever it is you’re doing.
Many of you have given me high praise for my fantasy basketball analysis, and I have included 30 of those messages below.
And while I’ve omitted the questions that went along with the praise, I’m pretty sure that you can all attest to me answering your emails. So thanks to all of you who have been with me since Day 1, and to everyone else, here’s what you’re missing out on.
Reader Praise for Roto Evil
“Hi Roto Evil. I really like your in-depth article on your top 50 Fantasy players. Keep up the good work.”
-Kevin Y.
“Hey, man, I just wanted to say I’m really enjoying your work on 82games right now. It’s intelligent stuff; by far the best projections I’ve seen around.”
-Benjamin Z.
“I have enjoyed fantasy hoops since 1990-91. I really agree with your ranking of players and will continue to check the site. You’re the first to include situational factors beyond the stats, injury in particular. That makes good sense. Thanks.”
-Paul E.
“Hey dude. I liked your fantasy scoring system and based my draft mostly based off of your rankings.”
-Evan H.
“Hey RotoEvil, Great stuff on 82games.com! Thanks a bunch. Upon reading about auction drafting, I excitedly told my whole league about it, and we’ve decided to give it a try.”
-Tommy N.
“Eric, Just wanted to give props and say I used your site and your system as my primary source for info this season and am looking forward to seeing what this team does.”
-Mike H.
“Hey man, I really enjoy reading your insights on fantasy basketball. I like the extra considerations that you have integrated into your statistical analysis and projections and am certain you have provided fantasy freaks everywhere with what may be the most reliable projections for this upcoming season.”
-Ken L.
“Mr Roto Evil, I just came upon your web site and found it to be fascinating: great analysis and enjoyable.”
-Lenny F.
“Hey, read your article about your preferred league settings. I have to say I’m happy someone agrees with me on that.”
-Jonathan H.
“Hi Eric, Just wanted to let you know I discovered your articles about 3 weeks ago and they definitely helped me with my draft.”
-Antouan M.
“Hey man, I am new to fantasy basketball and in love with your work.”
-Michael M.
“I am a frequent reader of your Fantasy section. When I look at my team, most of the players are in your Top 100, so I feel very good about it.”
-Kevin Y.
“I just found your site tonight and think that your RER system is ingenious. I wish I had found this BEFORE my draft last week, but I am glad to find someone who is as excited and passionate for Fantasy Basketball as you are.”
-John C.
“Hey E, I stumbled across your rankings and articles today while doing research for my draft tomorrow and I wanted to let you know I have a new favorite fantasy basketball site. I have something of a statistical background from work, and I appreciate the methodology you use. John Salmons is making you look pretty smart. A couple of people have asked how I knew to pick him up before the Kings’ first game of the season…. Hehe.”
-Reid S.
“Always a big fan of your site. You are my most trust worthy fantasy expert.”
-Kyung L.
“Great site, it’s been a big help so far.â€
-Jason W.
“Hi, I’ve been reading your weekly updates and it has been very helpful to me.â€
-Sean Y.
“I’d like to put out a big thank to you for all the effort and research that has obviously been put into this ranking system. I’ve just started to get into the fantasy basketball scene, and while I think there are a few flaws in the way the rankings work, they have still been an extremely useful tool for me.â€
-Brian A.
“I love reading your stuff. Wish you had more time to cover Fantasy hoops.â€
-Ryan M.
“Hey RotoEvil, I just started looking at your site and absolutely love it.â€
-Alex C.
“Love your work. After reading your articles and trying to pick up that elusive sleeper, I was able to select Ronnie Brewer in the 3rd round of our supplemental draft. A big Thank You for your continued write ups.â€
-Daniel D.
“Hey Eric, Your website is awesome!!!! We are currently in 1st place based on your draft advice and strategy.â€
-Richard C.
“First off want to thank you for your insight, this is my first year playing fantasy basketball and using your pre-draft rankings and the excel sheet I am currently in first place in a 13 team roto-keeper league. Your weekly outlooks are awesome and to reiterate I am 5 points up on the rest of the league because of your insights.â€
-Andrew F.
“Hey Eric, I’ve been reading your material on the fantasy basketball side of things this year. I agree with a lot of your assessments and your rankings are the ones I feel most comfortable with.”
-Omar H.
“Hey Eric, Thanks to your guide I’m in first place in my league.”
-Ryan B.
“RotoEvil, Love the site and your work. I’m in a head to head league and thanks to the ratings help in the draft I am currently in 1st place, even though I picked late in my draft and Okur and Hinrich are underperforming and Kev-Mart was injured.”
-Ed L.
“Great work. Your insight guided me in picks and halfway through I am in second place.”
-John P.
“Whats up man. im a long time fantasy player, but only started reading your site this year. Its really informative and I’m constantly going back to it for advice. I picked a great fantasy team at the first of the year and I am in first place.”
-Steven H.
“Evil, First I’d just like to say thanks for all that you do. I’m currently in first place in my league thanks to your help.”
-Bobby S.
“Hey Eric – I’m an NFL and NBA fantasy addict and so your advice/tips became part of my routine information-diet. For the most part, your analysis/advice/tips have been really helpful in allowing me to tweak my approach to drafting and managing my fantasy NBA teams. So thanks! I’m in 7 Yahoo leagues and have two 1st places, one 2nd place, and two 3rd places.”
-Steve S.
Dedication to the Haters
I’ve only received 2 “hate” messages all season long, and I will include both of those here as well.
“Dude, you killed me! I passed on T-Mac and B-Davis in my draft for guys like Andre Iguodala and Joe Johnson because of you! Am I freaking out for no reason, or are you nuts!
Looking back I can’t believe your rankings! Damn it all!”
-The Sneaker Pimp
You think this pimp is still complaining about drafting Iggy over T-Mac? I also had Baron ranked higher than any other rankings that I saw (and ahead of Joe Johnson).
“You should be fired Eric. I can understand why Yao Ming made your 1st team (He’s good for 20-10 every night and is a strong shot-blocking presence on a team that plays pretty poor perimeter defense). Not to mention, he’s a GREAT free throw shooter.
Unfortunately, Dwight Howard is a freak of nature transformer-like animal. He’s a BETTER defensive player, dominates the glass by about 4 more boards a night and shoots 60% from the field (compared to Yao who shoots a mere 50%). Now to Amare, who may shoot a similar FG% and better FT%, but doesn’t dominate the glass (8.98rpg to DHoward’s 14.87) and is a main contributor to one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. He is often injured and inconsistent.
Now, although Marcus Camby is having an all-star caliber season, he scores less than 10 points a game AND averages less boards a game than Howard despite being known as a rebounding machine. His FG% is atrocious at 44% and barely has a higher FT%, a stat you have grossly overrated. How can you respect yourself as a basketball journalist when it is clear you know next to nothing about the sport.”
-CP3MVP
CP3MVP is complaining about my Midseason Fantasy Hoops Awards article (even tho I named CP3 my MVP), where I named Yao, Amare, and Camby as my top 3 centers over Dwight Howard. What’s hilarious about this is he read the article on another site so it was the first thing he’s ever read by me.
So he has no clue how much I’ve hyped up the Man-Beast since day 1 (you all know what I’m talking about) or the fact that I drafted D-Ho in the 1st round in all 3 of my leagues this season. And since I seem to have grossly overrated FT%, I guess he also has no idea that Dwight Howard may break the record for most free throws attempted in a season by someone not named Wilt and is hurting teams’ FT% much more than even I anticipated. Of COURSE I still have love for my Man-Beast!
“To anyone who got a problem with what I say
The name is Evil E, send all drama this way!”

Love the idea of you charging for your fantasy insight – this info is limited in value when anyone can have it for free – also it seems that CP3MVP does not understand that your rankings are done from a fantasy perspective where all measurable cats are given equal weight, perhaps if you were ranking the best players in the nba regardless of fantasy value he would rank much higher.
Enjoying your new site. This is my first year playing fantasy basketball and I really wish I had found your stuff before I drafted. Your weekly schedules and comments are a HUGE help. Keep up the great work.
Thanks a lot guys!
If I DO decide to charge for my Draft Guide next year, I can guarantee you it will be even more extensive and helpful than this season’s.
Anyone else care to chime in on this matter?
Hey Eric… the new site is super!… your Weekly Team by Team Outlook was/is!? the best preparation tool for fantasy hoops lovers on the net… always very thorough and extremely useful… do you intend writing it on a regular basis or not?… Several times you mentioned you won’t be able to write it… I realize it takes a lot of time to prepare such an analysis… however even if you do not have the time I think it would be great if you simply tell us every weekend to expect it or not… Damian
Evil E – I’m a big fan of your hoops analysis and am enjoying your new site. One thing that I’d recommend is putting dates next to your columns so readers know what’s the most current stuff. Other than that it’s great! Any ideas for how the Mavs could add another shooter? I’m thinking Keith Van Horn’s contract plus Eddie Jones for Mike Miller. Would that be enough?
Thanks J.J. – I’ll keep that in mind. If I were Memphis there’s no way in hell I’d do that trade, but it seems like they want to unload and start over so who knows?
Damian – I’m glad you enjoy the weekly team-by-team outlooks. Obviously I’ve been busy working on this site, but I’ll get back to the fantasy stuff soon. I may change the format a bit, but I’m not going to turn my back on you guys!
In the meantime, Do you guys want me to create a post for you to ask trade, add/drop, and start/bench decisions?
That way whenever someone has a question about who to pickup, who to start, or a trade they’re considering, they can post it and get some feedback right away.
I think your site is incredible. Without your help I would be totally lost this season. You have put alot of hard work into this and it was totally worth it. Keep it up and great job thus far.
The trade post is a phenomenal idea.
Also as far as charging is concerned I would recommend making some of your fantasy insight free ie the top 100 but charge for the actual RER values. Also in fantasy sports timing is everything so consider giving those who pay a chance to see your fantasy articles and breakdowns of NBA trades before everyone else. I just think that you need to keep enough free to attract more to your sight and figure out ways to give a special vip treatment those with the cash.
Much appreciated TopNotch.
Sounds good, I’ll create a new post today dumber. Most definitely a sizable chunk of my “insight” would remain free with the best (and most recent) stuff being saved for “VIP treatment” as you say.
For example, I tried to keep updating my Player Rankings and Cheat Sheets thruout the preseason, but I was very hesitant to display any last minute changes in the last week leading up to my drafts. I was worried about potentially exposing my most recent rankings and such to other people in my leagues, but at the same time I wanted to provide my readers (you guys) with important updates throughout preseason.
That’s the biggest benefit (for me AND you) for charging in my opinion.
Then I could release a large chunk of my rankings, analysis, etc. for free on Sept. 1st and do free updates throughout September, but then when October rolls around, I could provide the comprehensive rankings and recent updates for members only. I wouldn’t have to worry about exposing my best material for EVERYONE to see in the days leading up to my drafts and my VIP crew would get the best analysis I can provide without having to worry that their league members are looking at the same thing (unless they’re VIP too of course).
But I’m just talking about next season right now, so I have plenty of time before I make any decisions…
I definitely appreciate your guys’ input!
My two cents about charging for your Draft Guide next year… I definitely think you should try charging because NO DOUBT your analysis has VALUE… of course it is extremely important to figure out “how much to charge†and “when to start charging†and as you mentioned you have enough time to think about it… additionally I believe it is very important to come up with IDEAS what more than the RER ranking for the first 200 players the payer will get… readers like me who have regularly visited 82games most probably will pay but in general not so many people will pay just for a list of 200 players and the respective updates, particularly if they did not try it before… btw I have been reading 82games since last September… did you post your players’ rankings in 2006, 2005?… that is another issue for the potential payers – how many years (not just months) they had it for free… You have been playing fantasy, writing for years, so most probably you have an idea how much a person should make out of this… if you decide charging let say $10 how many people you need to buy it 100, 500, 1000?!… on the positive side there are not so many useful draft guides on the net, you are doing it, it is worthy, why not charging… once again the big questions HOW MUCH and WHEN…
The trade, add/drop, start post was really a great idea… of course with all the comments/questions etc. it is confusing, it would be nice if it is somehow more structured… still it is good stuff…
Damian
Thanks for your input Damian. I did my “Midseason 41 Games In” piece for 82games last season, but I just started the draft guide thing this past year. My goal was to do such a kickass job that people would start to take notice, and I think I’ve accomplished that.
I agree that the trade, add, start post needs more structure, so I’ll try to think of something to fix that…
Greetings…
I really enjoy your articles and insights on fantasy b-ball…I find myself usually agreeing with you and think that your analysis of players offers plenty of insight for me to make an informed decision on my teams…keep up the great work. The new site is sweet too…looking forward to more of the same.
Cheers,
Craig
Thanks for the shout out Craig!
