Classic Movie - Repo Man

February 4, 2008

Repo ManThis 1984 classic features Emilio Estevez as a young punk and Harry Dean Stanton as a veteran repo-man-of-honor.

I commented on it earlier because I thought it was a great example of how “cult classics” can be underrated and overlooked on IMDB. Here’s what I wrote:

For example, Repo Man has an IMDB rating of just 6.7. This rating is ridiculous because the median score is an 8 and 20% gave it a perfect 10, 32% gave it a 9+, and 50.4% gave it an 8+. Over half the people who’ve seen it have considered it to be a very good movie, yet it’s rating is just 6.7? So I actually prefer the total % of 8-10 votes over IMDB’s “weighted average.”

Steve just saw the film as a result, and here’s what he had to say about it:

“I liked Repo Man…there was comedy on so many levels: consumerism, religion, sex, drugs, fraternity, sex, being yourself…. I was floored with laughter at least a dozen times. Also, I cant believe it was made in 1984! It had the feel of and relevance to our current times.”

So I’ve decided to make Repo Man my first “Classic Movie of the Month!”

Rather than try to describe it, here are 8 clips that kind of take you thru the movie….

(Chevy Malibu Intro scene - I wasn’t singing GUY)

(Punk scene with Circle Jerks song)

(Hey kid - You wanna make 10 bucks?)

(Asking for dough while eating “food”)

(The Repo Code - Ordinary fuckin people, I hate em!)

(Suppose you’re thinking about a plate of shrimp…)

(Fuck a John Wayne, man!)

(Long clip - Classic gun battle & death scene near the end)

“Repo Man comes out of left field, has no big stars, didn’t cost much, takes chances, dares to be unconventional, is funny, and works. There is a lesson here.”

-Roger Ebert

If you have Digital Cable, check your On Demand “Free Movies” section right now.

Repo Man is currently available for free viewing in my area!

I love this movie. I’ve rented it for my kid to watch a couple times and he keeps fronting on it. If he would give it a chance he would be glued. It is pure comedy.

You crack me up dude. Your kid is what, 8? I admire your attempts tho. What are some of his favorite (non-kid) movies?

The soundtrack for this movie is epic! Pick it up if you have a chance.

  5. Evil E on February 28th, 2008 6:09 am

Yeah I noticed that. I’ll keep my eyes open for it.

I think it may be a kid movie in the end but he likes Stand By Me. He really liked Little Miss Sunshine and Pams Labryth…plus he’s a freak about zombie movies and scary movies. We have all the Resident Evil movies and 28 Weeks later, etc. He saw some shit a few years back in 2004 I guess. He was 5. HA! He was scared shitless. It was Dawn of the Dead maybe.

I keep trying to get him to watch ARMY Of DARKNESS which is my shit! I love that movie but it’s some good old fashion, “If my dad likes it, IT MUST SUCK” for him.

At least he respects my taste in music, yaoming?

by the way E, I want to start trading music and requesting music,,,making interactive mix tapes and shit. Can you make that happen?

OMG. Your kid saw Dawn of the Dead when he was 5? I saw freakin’ Gremlins when I was 5 and got scared of going into the garage!

I liked 28 DAYS Later a lot but I thought WEEKS was over the top and too much for me. Your son’s gnarly if he’s all into that. Hmm does he like giant creature movies? Like Tremors, Godzilla, etc? If so, you should watch this one with him:

    The Host - 2006

It’s a Korean flick that starts out w/ this badass creature terrorizing the city, but then it turns into a Little Miss Sunshine-esque movie. Pretty solid.

Yeah man, I’d love to get a dedicated music zone going. Lemme figure out the best way to do that. But first, PLEASE tell me you got a new CD player for your truck!!!

  9. Jonny on February 28th, 2008 12:23 pm

We watch the Kung Fu Hustle you hooked us up with about once a month. Shaolin Soccer is another favorite.

  10. Jonny on February 28th, 2008 12:23 pm

…and no CD player in the truck. I told wifey I wanted a system for the big 3-0 in april.

funny stuff right here. When my son was about 1 week old we sat down and watched Godzilla. The image of a giant beast is engrained in his head. He really likes Godzilla, dinosaurs, etc….

has anybody grabbed the soundtrack? There’s a track by a group called The Plugz on it. I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s a nice song. Has a great vibe.

Hey man, the guy who made Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer (Stephen Chow I think) is coming out with a new movie soon. Gotta peep that for sure. You NEED a new system. Any big plans for 30?

Thanks for the Repo Man soundtrack. Yeah, I’d never heard of the Plugz. Good stuff..

Hey Evil, this movie gets props from the critics. In a list of “The 100 Best Sci-Fi Films of All Time” as rated by a roundup of today’s critics; it placed #21 on the list ahead of the likes of:

    #82 Dark City
    #68 The Abyss
    #62 Jurassic Park
    #61 Abre Los Ojos
    #57 Planet of the Apes
    #47 Donnie Darko
    #45 A Clockwork Orange
    #44 12 Monkeys
    #39 The Fly
    #36 Blade Runner
#33 Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    #32 The Matrix
    #29 Ghostbusters
    #28 Men in Black
    #27 Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    #22 Back to the Future

Of course, the ordering of the list is totally irrelevant. Blade Runner at #36 is a joke by any reasonable criterion, but that’s to be expected, as this list is derived from a mathematical synthesis of the reviews, and reflects no personal or panel-driven editing.

That doesn’t explain everything. I’m still scratching my head trying to figure how Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (#51) is ranked 36 spots ahead of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (#87). I thought the final episode of the more recently trilogy was underrated by fans, but it was mostly unfulfilled promise.

I still haven’t figured out what “The Host” was all about.

It finished #8 on the Sci-Fi list. The critics freaking loved that movie (it was its score on RT that led me to it…that’s why I like the list. The order isn’t imporant. What’s important is there’s bound to be gems on there (like “Reaper Man”) that you didn’t know about.

I’ve tacked on a bunch of those movies to my Blockbuster Queue.

Thanks man. I found the list you’re talking about, but it looks like you have to go thru each one individually, which is a major pain.

I’m glad some people realize how classic Repo Man is. The Host at #8 is pretty wild. I liked the movie, but not THAT much. Lemme know if you can view an index of 1-100.
