Your favorite Girl Scout cookies?

February 24, 2008

Girl Scout CookiesMy housemate bought some Girl Scout Cookies today. Fortunately for him, he didn’t get my favorites…

Thin mints and shortbread cookies are alright, but they’re just too boring for me.

Before we get to the poll tho, let’s do a quick rundown of these iconic American sweets (hopefully I didn’t just sound like Marc Summers).

Thin Mints

Thin Mints: The most enduring and universally familiar Girl Scout cookie. These round, mint-flavored cookies covered with dark chocolate perennially sell the most boxes of any cookie. Thin Mints have never changed their name.

It’s tough to hate on Thin Mints: they’re tasty and familiar. I like them quite a bit actually.

TrefoilsTrefoils AKA Shortbread: These shortbread cookies are shaped like the Girl Scout Trefoil design. Scot Teas were a similar, lighter sugar cookie made by the now defunct Burry. Little Brownie Bakers calls them Trefoils; ABC Bakers call them Shortbread.

Shortbread cookies are supposed to be boring, but the taste of these pales in comparison to Walkers pure butter Shortbread from Scotland.

Do-Si-DosDo-Si-Dos® AKA Peanut Butter Sandwich: A sandwich cookie. The round, bumpy perforated oatmeal cookie top and bottom surrounds a peanut butter-flavored layer inside. Do-Si-Dos® (formerly Gauchos) are baked by Little Brownie Bakers. ABC Bakers calls them Peanut Butter Sandwiches.

I like peanut butter a lot, but I’d rather have ice cream in the middle of a cookie sandwich.

SamoasSamoas® AKA Caramel deLites®: These are round doughnut-shaped cookies about two inches in diameter with a hole in the center, covered in caramel and toasted coconut, and then striped with chocolate. Samoas® are made by Little Brownie Bakers. The ABC version is called Caramel deLites®.

Now we’re talking. Samoas are chewy, rich, and rolled in toasted coconut. A+ grindy. Here’s a recipe to make your own!

TagalongsTagalongs® AKA Peanut Butter Patties®: These are round cookies with a layer of peanut butter on top, and covered in chocolate. These cookies come in a red box. Little Brownie Bakers calls them Tagalongs®; ABC Bakers call them Peanut Butter Patties®.

Tagalongs are also money. I love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but these patties are even softer and melt in your mouth better.

I should add that my mom always bought twice (or even thrice!) as many boxes of Thin Mints and Trefoils vs. Samoas and Tagalongs. Or maybe it just seemed that way because you only get 15 cookies per box for the Samoas and Tagalongs vs. 36 Thin Mints and 45 Trefoils per box. This probably made me crave and enjoy my two favorites that much more. What are your two favorites?

I hear good things about the somoas but since I f’ing hate coconut I am not a fan. Tagalongs were my favorite as a kid but I must say the thin mints are up there especially when you freeze them, which I am surprised no one has mentioned!

The thing about short bread is their buttery after taste that leaves you craving more. Hard to eat just one. I agree on freezing thin mints, it’s really the best way to enjoy them.

Coconut mixed with chocolate and sugar/carmal would tast great served on top of dog poo.

I actually don’t know if I’ve ever frozen thin mints, but that sounds superb.

Ardilla - I had a trefoils cookie today and the amount of butter in those things is weak! Don’t you prefer the Walkers Shortbread from Cost-Plus and such?

RotoDr - I just added a recipe to make your own Samoas. Dog poop not included.

Yeah, I’m pretty bummed my housemate didn’t get any Samoas…or Samoans for that matter.

I saw those dudes wrestle at Madison Square Garden back in the 80’s. I can’t remember the year but I’m thinking 88 maybe? . Seeing the shit in person was WAY different than what I would see on TV. It was like a circus.

    I’m going to go again.

I’ve had so many boxes of somoas this past week I’ve lost count. Canaan came home with some Girl Scout chocolate chip cookie. I never saw those before. I didn’t get to try them cuzz he ate them all between buying them and bringing them home..

I had a box just sitting in my car all day today. Melted. hmmmm. or break’m up and throw them on top of ice cream. thats good,

Hah! Yeah, I bought myself a box and 24 hours later, it was empty. Someone’s got to try out the homemade Samoas recipe to see how they turn out.
